Sonepur Mela: a visitor's guide to Asia's oldest cattle fair
Sonepur sits where the Gandak meets the Ganga, about 25 km north of Patna. On Kartik Purnima pilgrims bathe at the confluence and pray at the Harihar Nath temple — one of few shrines where Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Har) share one sanctum. The bath marks the start of the Harihar Kshetra Mela, which runs for about a month.
A fair older than empires
Local tradition connects the place with the Gajendra Moksha story, in which an elephant caught by a crocodile was saved by Vishnu. Historians note that elephants and horses were traded here for centuries; Chandragupta Maurya is said to have bought elephants at Sonepur. Today, trade in elephants is restricted by law, and the fair is better known for horses, cattle, handicrafts and food.
Getting there
- By road from Patna across the JP Setu or the Gandhi Setu — 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic.
- Sonepur railway junction is on the Hajipur–Chhapra line.
- During the mela, Bihar Tourism usually runs tourist cottages near the grounds; book early.
What to look for
- Horse sales and races in the mornings.
- Stalls of Madhubani paintings, Sikki grass craft, Bhagalpur silk and bamboo work.
- Litti-chokha, malpua and the evening cultural programmes on the government stage.
Tips
Go on a weekday, wear shoes you can walk in dust with, carry cash for small stalls, and keep children close in the crowded bathing area on Kartik Purnima.
