Why Chhath is different

Chhath is dedicated to Surya and Chhathi Maiya (Shashthi Devi), the protector of children. It has no idol and no priest, and the strictest rules of purity of any Indian festival: the prasad is made on a new or freshly plastered chulha, wheat for thekua is washed and dried under watch, and nothing touches the floor. Rich and poor stand in the same water at the same time — which is why many Biharis call it the most democratic festival they know.

The Kartik Chhath is the big one, but a smaller Chaiti Chhath is kept in spring, six days after Chaitra Navratri begins.
