Bihar Calendar

Daily life in Bihar runs on two calendars at once. Offices and schools use the Gregorian calendar, while festivals, weddings and fasts follow the lunar Hindu panchang. Bihar uses the Purnimanta system, where a month ends on the full moon. That is why Holi falls on "Chaitra Krishna Pratipada" here, while in Gujarat or Maharashtra the same day is called Phalguna Krishna Pratipada.

Mithila also keeps its own Maithil panchang, published from Darbhanga, which usually agrees with these dates but sometimes decides a festival differently when a tithi spans two days.
